RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several approach shafts providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
