One Piece Concludes a Quarter-Century Tradition in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in January, after the current storyline concludes, the anime will go on a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, the series will produce a pair of cours every year for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, tempo, and pacing of the original manga.” However, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests additional One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime had a six-month break that started in late 2024 and ended in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the visuals and allow the comic to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to supply fans with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than ever before.

Adopting Modern Trends

While a few summary installments appeared during the recent run, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the manga, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the anime adapting one chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or more to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of creation, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have so many filler arcs, and the quality of the art can change drastically between one episode and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two maximum coming out each annually, allowing for better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
