Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using such drugs need to be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to original weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically see a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is more common among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural management.
